Does Your Furnace Need Repair Services?

Does your home feel chilly? Or does your furnace seem to be working overtime without ever making the house feel warm? If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, your furnace may need repair work. Here are some common signs that it’s time to call a professional:

IT’S AN OLDER FURNACE

Furnaces are usually useful for, on average, about 18 years. Nevertheless, when a heating unit gets to about 15 years of age, it’s bound to require more repairs in the same way an older vehicle with a lot of miles is going to need more work done. Having repairs done professionally is important, keep in mind, because it makes the equipment last longer and performs better. Additionally, consistent maintenance prolongs the lifespan of a furnace.

TEMPERATURE SEEMS UNMANAGEABLE

If you’re having trouble regulating your temperature levels and it seems like you are constantly adjusting your thermostat to get the right amount of heat, it might not be the thermostat causing the problem. Your home heating system might be struggling to distribute heat throughout your home the way it needs to. The best way to figure out why your furnace isn’t working properly is to call a professional like White Oak Heating & Cooling so we will look into the problem, check your furnace, and inspect all the various components to pinpoint the problem.

YOUR HEATING COSTS ARE INCREASING

When home heating efficiency declines, it is a sign your furnace needs service. If it’s a relatively newer heating system, it probably needs repair services. If the heating unit is older (15 years or more) you should begin considering furnace replacement. Often, furnace inefficiencies are caused by wear and tear on internal parts. Remember to check your air filters. In any case, if your home heating costs are on the rise, we suggest calling us before it gets worse so we can offer affordable solutions to curb home heating costs and keep your equipment in optimal condition.

ODD SOUNDS/YELLOW PILOT LIGHT

First off, if you have a pilot light on a gas furnace and the flame is yellow, you need to call us immediately. This is a dangerous sign, a safety hazard. Aside from that, if your home heating system has new sounds coming from it or unusual noises (rattling, popping, banging, or squealing), this is also a warning sign or a red flag. As far as the flame on the pilot goes, pilot lights should always be blue on gas furnaces. A yellow pilot flame is a dangerous sign. You need to call us right away if your pilot light isn’t blue and the same is true if your furnace is making unusual noises.

FAQ

Furnace Repair FAQ

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

If your home heating system has been blowing cool air, it’s a problem. Homeowners need their furnaces for heat! If a heater isn’t blowing heat, we suggest checking the HVAC unit’s fan settings first. Your fan setting needs to be on “auto” and not set to “on.” If this doesn’t solve the issue, check your furnace’s air filter to make sure it isn’t clogged or needs to be replaced. If this doesn’t solve your heating problem, the next thing to check is your pilot light. Beyond these suggestions, if you still aren’t getting the heated air you need from your furnace, call White Oak Heating & Cooling right away so we can come to help you get to the bottom of your problem without delay.

Why is my furnace running nonstop?

Here again, the problem with a furnace running nonstop could be caused by the furnace fan setting. Make sure your furnace fan is set to “auto” and that it hasn’t been moved to the “on” setting. When an HVAC unit’s fan is fixed to the “on” setting, it runs nonstop even when there isn’t heat being generated. After this, we suggest checking the unit’s fan limit switch, which requires a manual override. If this does not resolve the problem of nonstop operation and your furnace is still continuously running, give White Oak Heating & Cooling a call. We’re happy to send a furnace expert near you over to help.

Why does my furnace keep turning off?

The most common reason a furnace turns off and on constantly is caused by a dirty air filter. This is also known as short cycling. If the filter is dirty, it’s an easy fix you can do quickly and cheaply on your own. If it’s not the problem, you need to check your thermostat to make sure something isn’t affecting the temperature reading. Things like sunlight, a nearby heat register, a heating appliance or a fire can mess with your thermostat’s reading to where it’s not properly detecting the temperatures in the home. The worst-case scenario for short cycling is caused by poor installation. If a home heating system is not sized properly for a home, it tends to short-cycle. Call us if this doesn’t answer your question.
