If your furnace isn’t generating heat but seems to be functioning still, don’t worry. The most likely reason is that your pilot light is out, but fortunately, it’s an easy fix. Just follow the simple steps below from White Oak Heating & Cooling to reignite the pilot light yourself. However, be sure to read and follow each step carefully to avoid any potential safety risks.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS HOMEOWNERS CAN FOLLOW FOR RELIGHTING THEIR FURNACE’S PILOT LIGHT?

Before we begin, it’s important to stress that you should always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions first when possible. Most manufacturers place instructions on how to relight your particular furnace’s pilot light directly on the side of the furnace. But if you are not able to easily locate these directions, or have a hard time viewing them, then you can reference these general instructions below:

1. Before you begin, find your furnace’s pilot light. Depending on your furnace model, you might need to remove the burner cover beforehand. Then, it’s vital to turn the gas valve off. Usually, this is located nearby. Always remember this safety measure; shutting off the gas flow will prevent any potentially harmful consequences from an accumulation of gas in one area.

2. Secondly, you’ll want to find the furnace power button. It’s typically located near the bottom of most furnaces. Once you’ve found it, go ahead and turn it off.

3. For your safety, please wait for the gas to dissipate for at least five minutes before starting the relighting process. This is crucial and recommended by experts, as bypassing this step could result in either a fire or an explosion.

4. There should be a pilot light assembly not far from the pilot light area. Go ahead and turn the “pilot” setting to on. Then press and hold down the “reset” switch as you simultaneously bring a long-reaching lighter (or match) slowly and carefully to the pilot light. When you see the tiny spark of fire in the pilot light appear, then you can release your grip on the “reset” switch. At this point, the pilot light should remain lit.

5. It’s important to remember to turn your gas supply back on after confirming the pilot light stays ablaze without any issues.

6. If your furnace does, in fact, have a burner cover that you had to remove, be sure to place it back on.

These steps will make your home feel cozy again shortly! However, if the pilot light does not stay lit after implementing these tips, there might be a problem with one of the parts. If that seems to be the issue, then please feel free to contact us so we can send one of our NATE-certified technicians out to your home to safely figure out what is wrong and replace any non-functioning components as needed.
