Do you know how old your air conditioner is? If this question has got you picking your brain trying to remember just how many years your cooling unit has been around, we highly suggest finding out. Why is that? This is because being aware of the age of your air conditioner may provide valuable foresight and enables you, as the homeowner, to mentally prepare for the future. If you didn’t know it already, the average lifespan of a well-maintained air conditioner is anywhere from 15 to 20 years. Therefore, when you know your AC’s age will keep you from being caught off guard down the road in case your air conditioner is nearing the end of its life.

Now, if your AC paperwork has gone missing and you don’t know how to tell how old it is, don’t worry. Your White Oak Heating & Cooling experts have a couple of simple steps to help guide you to unveil your air conditioner’s age:

1. DID YOU LOOK FOR THE MANUFACTURE DATE ON THE OUTDOOR UNIT?

It’s always a good idea to start at the source itself. In this case, this means starting by looking at your condenser. So, venture outside, where the condenser is located! If you don’t know exactly what that is, it is the large metal box positioned in your backyard or nestled by the side of your house. Once you’ve found it, look for a nameplate on one of its sides, where all the essential information about the unit resides. Then scan the upper right corner or the top area of the nameplate for the words “MFR DATE.” The exact wording may vary but should be worded along these lines. The MFR DATE (manufacture date) will indicate how old your AC is. However, should you not find it there, don’t give up just yet. Simply continue your search by proceeding to step number two!

2. DID YOU LOOK FOR THE MANUFACTURE DATE ONLINE?

Unleash your online inner detective by writing down the model, brand, and serial number from the nameplate. A quick picture snapped with your phone is also suitable for added convenience. Then, using your preferred online search engine, input those three vital details into the search bar along with “manufacture date” added to the end of it. Fingers crossed, with a dash of virtual magic, various websites with specific instructions to decode the manufacture date of your particular AC model will generate. At this point, you should have all the information you need to crack the code for your AC’s manufacture date (A.K.A. age). Well done!
